Haywards Heath is located in Mid Sussex, formerly part of East Sussex, a change to the county boundary in 1974 brought it under the jurisdiction of West Sussex, laying 36 miles south of London, 14 miles north of Brighton and with Gatwick Airport just 13 miles away. The town owes much of its growth to the railway and has an impressive collection of Victorian and Edwardian houses, many situated in mature grounds surrounding the Conservation Area of Muster Green. The town is still growing, with new housing developments both to the north and south of the town. Haywards Heath has an excellent choice of places to eat with a choice of restaurants, bistros, and wine bars. There is a shopping centre. Clair Hall offers year-round entertainment including a comedy club. For sporting enthusiasts the town has two non-league football clubs, a rugby union team, two hockey clubs and there are two leisure centres, The Triangle and Dolphin Leisure Centre, both offering a range of sports including a swimming pool, sports hall, and gymnasium. There are a number of primary schools in and around Haywards Heath, along with secondary schools and a college.
