Description

BRICKWORKS SAYS

Located within Deal’s much-admired Middle Street Conservation Area, this three-bedroom house unfolds across four floors of a 17th-century building. The home has been respectfully renovated by its current owners, with painted panelling, exposed brickwork and eccentric built-in cupboards — the kind only centuries can produce — sitting comfortably alongside thoughtful updates.

The main living room centres around a generous hearth with a wood burner, while exposed beams overhead lend an easy sense of permanence. Like all the best historic houses, it reveals itself slowly; odd corners, clever details and small surprises appear long after moving day. A central staircase divides the ground-floor living space into distinct zones, leading down to a kitchen and dining room that feels both cocooning and sociable.

From here, ancient stone steps rise to a neatly walled garden, compact enough to remain charming, rather than demanding. On the upper floors are two double bedrooms and a family bathroom, while the top floor is given over to a tranquil principal suite, with a generous dressing and shower room.

Life by the sea here is less summer romance, more year-round ritual. Deal manages the increasingly rare trick of feeling both connected and village-like, with London still comfortably within reach when required.

THE OWNERS SAY

Owning a home with such rich history has always felt both a privilege and a responsibility. Dating back to circa 1680, the house immediately captured our imagination when we first began searching for a property in Deal. And we felt it offered the perfect balance between period character and comfortable modern living.

When we undertook the renovation some six years ago, our aim was always to preserve the soul of the house while creating a home that felt calm, warm and functional for everyday life. Even now, after all this time, we still find ourselves noticing new details and nuances that make living here feel special.

Some local advice before we decided to move to Deal was to spend a winter here, and if we still loved it, we’d know we had found home. Winters here have indeed been some of the most magical times of all; wandering through softly lit conservation-area streets, seeing fires glowing through old windows — the air filled with the comforting scent of firewood aglow — and returning home on cold evenings to the warmth and comfort of this house. Proof that seaside living isn’t just about getting the best out of summer.
